Failing PSU Question

Hey all!

I have been attempting to fix my parents computer and, even though it started to work fine after working on it, it's now slow as ever.

My question was that will their system run better for a short time (1 week) if I reformatted their computer? The reason I ask this is because I reformatted their computer and it was running smoothly but now, after a week, it is back to being as slow as before. We have had 2 hdd failures in the past year and now I'm thinking that the PSU is causing all of these problems. I have read that they can cause freezing (which happens) and hdd failure (which happened twice so far). I am just curious on if the system would have ran faster for that week if the PSU was really failing.

For some additional information the system is 8 years old, is running vista, and was a prebuilt HP.

Thanks in advanced and if you have suggestions that would be great!

Being prebuilt with an 8 year old power supply, you're definitely ready for a replacement power supply. A failing power supply can certainly cause problems, as power delivery becomes unstable. HDDs are very fragile already, and when you start messing with unstable power delivery, you can see performance issues. Download this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/active_smart.ht... and test your HDD to see the health of it.

hehe, with an 8 year old build anything is possible ! :p

The PSU would be my first guess to, but all of those components could be failing. A new build wouldn't cost much either if it's just a internet computer. ($300 ish)

You can use CHKDSK to see how your HDD is aswell.
