Hey tech experts.....so as the title says it is finally time to upgrade my desktop computer....i had bought a pre-built Hp pavilion p6 2388ea http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay?javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.prp_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=wsrp-navigationalState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c03533207-10%257CdocLocale%253D%257CcalledBy%253D&javax.portlet.tpst=ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01&sp4ts.oid=5295969&ac.admitted=1401196675395.876444892.199480143 bout a year ago (yes i was a complete noob back then n was wrongly lead to believe that this thing can handle BF3 at ultra settings) but now i've had enough...so i ask you kind people to give me some advice....the pc has an A10-5700 but its the gpu that sucks, i was looking at EVGA's Gtx 750 ti, can this cpu handle this gpu?....also, is it even possible to upgrade pre built pc's?.....will i need to upgrade my psu as well?

if u think any other necessary changes need to be made to the system please tell me :)

With an APU, Mantle will give a noticeable improvement, but that's only in games that support Mantle (BF4, Thief, etc). You definitely need an AMD GPU to use Mantle, as only AMD GPUs have access to it now.

Don't get me wrong, the 750 Ti is a great card, and will give you great performance for the price and power draw. I was just recommending the AMD side due to the APU and Mantle being used, and you mentioned Battlefield in your first post. The 750 Ti would definitely give you great performance overall :)

And about temps, they're really only a problem on the 290/290x. Getting a custom cooled card will alleviate any cooling problems on the AMD cards anyway, so that's not really an issue anymore.

With a CPU like that, I would go with an AMD card. The 265 is the same price as the 750 Ti, but will give you better performance overall, and it'll really help in games that support the Mantle API:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Video Card: MSI Radeon R7 265 2GB Video Card ($139.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Antec 450W ATX Power Supply ($37.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $177.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

hmm k i get ur point...thnks for the help....but i wanted to go nvidia for the phsyx effects (omg they're so sexy)...what do you mean by a 'cpu like that'?.....is it unable to support physx...em aware that mantle will help SIGNIFICANTLY with low-mid end cards but phsyx....n i take it the current psu is not sufficient enough :(

You won't be getting much PhysX with that, as PhysX will give you frame drops. And there really aren't many games that support PhysX, but if you like it that's your call lol Mantle helps significantly with lower powered CPUs, not GPUs.

What I meant by 'CPU like that' is that APUs have poor CPU performance. This causes performance drops in games that like CPU power, which is becoming more and more. Mantle takes load off the CPU, which gives performance improvement to lower powered CPUs.

k soz my bad bout the mantle thing :p ....this cpu is obviously not the best but i reckon it can handle alot of stuff....how much of a fps drop will i experience with full physx...say in a game like Metro LL with a gtx 750 ti..em willing to OC the card as well btw

I don't use PhysX, even with my NVIDIA GTX 760 so I couldn't tell you from personal experience, but there are people all the time on here complaining about poor performance and 'severe' lag when using PhysX (even with high-end components).

APUs really aren't meant for higher end gaming. They are meant to be used by themselves for low to medium quality gaming at 720p, so when settings and resolution get cranked up, even when paired with a dedicated GPU, they just lack the brute force needed for the AAA titles. You'll get fine performance generally, but when the action hits, APUs will see frame drops and lag, which from my point of view is worse than overall average FPS lol

hmm k i've looked at a couple of reviews n while the gtx 650 ti uses 60w n requires no power cables (wow) the 265 uses 115w and requires a 6pin power connector...tht would mean i hav to get a new psu n spend more money....unfortunately i am very very tight on budget ryt now....i'd planned to wait till i hav enough money to get a brand new pc but i cant handle the lag anymore....so final question :) ...u said tht this apu's r not exactly meant for high end gaming.....but i mean i still hav an amd cpu......so do u hav to have an amd gpu for mantle to work on the cpu???...tht doesnt make any sense...how much of a fps gain will mantle give anyways, over the gtx 750ti ...also, with my computer case...the last thing i want is things running hot, n i noe amd has a history of keeping its chips hot

hmm k thks for all ur help.....really appreciate it...the battlefield mention thing was used to trick me into buying this pc by a salesman (god i wish his macbook dies someday on him n apple doesnt refund him) but yea...i play alot more phsyx games than mantle ones, hawken, borderlands 2 etc...not so much BF3/4....u said the difference with mantle will be noticeable....i myt be asking too much of u...but how much roughly?....if its more than 10-15 frames then it myt just be worth it giving up phsyx...but i will hav to pay extra for a psu, will hav to remove the old one (all the cables n stuff) n then get the new one in...i mean i theoritcally noe how to assemble pc's but hav never actually done it so loads of hassle here i guess

The overall FPS increase isn't too much with Mantle, but you have much less frame drops. If the games you play don't support it, though, it doesn't really matter lol

Since you like PhysX and play those games mostly, the 750 Ti definitely sounds like the winner here. Again, it's a great card that performs very well, you'll definitely be very happy with it :)
