I know its an old motherboard with Pci 2.0 ports but is it possible to attach two 280x (or even maybe 290x) on it and connect them via Cross-fire? And if yes, would you lose a lot of the performance such cards could get if they were attached to PCI 3.0 slots?

I am willing to upgrade my current gaming PC slowly without discarding any working components so I'm basically trying to see whether its possible to avoid having to buy another motherboard and CPU in order to use the new graphic cards.

It will work fine. x58 is actually better for multi-card configs then z87 LOL.

PCI 2.0 vs 3.0 doesn't make too much difference.

Wow is that true?!

Ok I will work like this for now. When the motherboard dies (its been going for 5 years :p  !) I will buy a new one with PCI 3.0. But from what I read, it will not make much difference if its PCI 2.0 or 3.0.

x58 can provide x16/x16 lanes in crossfire, while z87 can do something like x8/x8 (I think).

I have an x58 (Asus P6T V2) that I use for SLI and it works well. I don't notice any difference in performance to benchmarks tested on x79 platforms (just the graphic performances of course).

What CPU do you have? you may need to OC it if you haven't done so already to get good performance in games.

I have the i7 920 and I barely ever overclocked it. But games are becoming even more demanding and even if I try to overclock the system, games are still quite laggy on high graphics settings that's why I'm willing to do this upgrade.

if you can overclock it to even 3.5ghz it will give u a pretty good performance boost, especially in some of the newer games. the new gpu will also help ALOT
