How does DDR3L work?

The L stands for low power (see here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM).

That being the case, I would assume it does indeed work best in pairs. If I was using DDR3L memory, I would ensure that all memory met this standard to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.
