1080P 3D Output @ 60Hz from Graphics Card Impossible?

I have an EVGA (02G-P4-3686-KR) GeForce GTX 680 FTW 2GB graphics card and a Samsung 40" TV (UN40FH6030FXZA).

I have them connected via HDMI and when I set the Nivida Control Panel to output in Stereoscopic 3D, my only options for 1080P is 24Hz. For 720P I have 60Hz.

24Hz is way too slow and looks horrible. 720P is great and all, but I'd like to pump out 1080P from this thing. Is this a limitation of the card? Is it time for an upgrade?

This is a 120Hz TV with a 240Hz (fake) "Clear Motion" mode. I find it hard to believe that I can buy a standalone 3D Blu-ray player that will output 1080P @ 60Hz in 3D, but my GTX 680 can't.

Solution
Until HDMI 2.0 comes out HDMI doesn’t support true 120hz (for gamming), the 120hz you get when watching TV happens in the TV not the blu ray player. The TVchanges the 24fps (average fps that blu ray is recorded at) to 120hz…. I will just let you read this..

There is a better link but I cannot find it right now. I will look for it again after work.

Does that imply that there is a better HDMI cable I can use that will provide the 60Hz I am looking for?

As my TV does not have DVI, I fail to see how DVI-D to HDMI will be the solution. Even if it is the solution, does that then mean that the ports on my graphics card are inferior to those of the ports on the back of an off the shelf 3D Blu-ray player?

I ask, again then, how an off the shelf 3D Blu-ray Player exports 60Hz via HDMI?

3D Blu-ray does not operate at 60hz. It runs at 30hz at most. Most likely 24hz. If you get any more than that, it is TV post processing being done after the TV gets it. Most likely by simply doubling each frame, but it won't receive that 60hz of info.

I find it strikingly hard to believe given (to me), 24Hz is unwatchable. I'm buying one tonight (had to move the computer out of the living room) to see.

dude when you play a 3d movie from a player or your pc its running @24hz -1080p if its a 60hz tv/monitor or at full 60hz but at 720p res

my 3d tv has a limit of 60hz so I only know that much, I don't know about playing a 3d movie on a 120hz monitor and if it will still keep the 24hz thing or not, also on 3d movies at 24hz is very watchable even standard videos run @24hz, all the tv shows and movies you watch run @24-26hz

When you say 24hz in 3D, that means two sets of images are working at 24hz for a combined 48hz. Most movies are 24hz, so that is perfectly watchable.

pretty much yeah

Recording and rendering at 24Hz produce very different experiences. Cameras inherently have motion blur, computer rendering does not. Basically watching 24 FPS footage isnt anywhere near as bad watching 24 FPS gameplay because of the motion blur, which blends the frames together visually so it appears far less stuttery than without. Games and such can emulate motion blur, but typically only stylistically and not actually as proper motion blur would necessitate pre-rendering frames which would play havoc with input lag.

Adam,

I am in the same boat as you! I was very disappointed too! Please keep this thread going. Any updates?

I have FX8350, 8GB, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 680, 4GB card. HDTV Vizio E3D470VX HDTV.

I bought it to run on PC, but it sat for a year, after reading manual saying it had to be 6ft away for 3D.. Well an HDMI cord made its way to the 47" from my PC last week, and I paid $40 for nvidias 3DPLAY.. Although ioshock Infinite looks great in 720@60, 1080@24Hz is horrific/poor.. :(

There will be no update as long as that TV supports only HDMI 1.4a. If it supports a higher version of HDMI, then you might have hope with a GTX 970 or 980.

I recall having an AMD card when I bought my first 120hz 3D monitor. With AMD, at least at the time, and still the case with my monitor, AMD was limited to 720p@60hz. It was pretty awesome, but as soon as I tried it with 3D Vision on an old Nvidia card, I knew I had to upgrade to 1080@60hz.
