As the title suggests, I'm trying to run the original Crysis, (I've bought all 3 as I've never played them before), but cannot get it to start.

When attempting to run the crysis.exe a black window appears momentarily, then the screen goes completely black, and finally returns to the desktop. This all happens in a few seconds of launching the exe.

I've tried some troubleshooting myself, I managed to find an amd.txt file which appears to list various AMD graphics cards, the R9 280x obviously isn't listed as this game pre-dates it by some way. Could this be a cause for the issue?

I've updated the game to the latest 1.2.1, any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Installed and updated to the latest version on my laptop and it works fine, so it must be an issue with graphics drivers or something on my PC.

I've completely removed the 14.4 AMD drivers, then installed the previous version, but it still isn't loading

So I've tried a few other things, i.e removing video drivers completely so that only the basic VGA driver is being used, running as administrator, 64bit fixes, nocd .exe's. Still no luck in getting it working though.

It really doesn't make sense to me as it works fine on my Windows 8.1 64bit laptop...

Strangely I had the same issue with Cars 2 the video game.

I'm going to re-install Windows and see what happens.

After a fresh install of Windows 8.1 it still isn't working, video drivers are up to date, all Directx versions have been installed, visual C++'s, really running out of ideas.

Think it's time to give up on this one!

Im not sure if you can do this the same way on windows 8 as you can on 7 but try right clicking on Crysis, go to properties, compatibility and run in compatibility mode for windows XP. You can also try solving the issue with Cars and it could be related to the problem with Crysis.

Unfortunately I've already tried that, sorry should have mentioned.

Strangely though, in trying to resolve the issue with Crysis I installed all C++ redistributables, now one of the games that ran before I reinstalled Windows is no longer starting either.

No idea what's going on...

Not sure if it's driver, directx or something else that's the issue.

I posted this a little while back, it is about getting it to work on Windows 7, but it might help.

The way I found to get that working was to only patch it to 1.1 and run it in compatability mode for Windows Vista and Run As Administrator. Patching to anything other than 1.1 caused the came to crash after about 5 minutes. I have the Disc version so I can patch to whatever version, but the digital version may not give you that option.

Thanks for the response, only just seen this though, I resorted to installing windows 7 64bit and have had absolutely no issues with Crysis, Cars 2, Outlast, etc.

I'd love to find out what the issue with Windows 8.1 is though, as I'd like to take advantage of the faster boot times etc.

I think it's unlikely to be the graphics driver as the same driver is used across both Windows 7 and 8/8.1.

It's difficult to say, as there may be another driver interfering somewhere, or it could be a direct x, .net framework, c++ software issue.

No idea, either way it cost me a good 5 hours of my life that I'll never get back lol.

At least I've got it working now though!
