So I am looking to upgrade my aging system, what should I look into?

I have found other similar threads on this site with extremely helpful answers. I usually just purchase a new PC every couple of years, but am debating if it would be cheaper to just upgrade parts of my current or if a new start is needed.

My PC has:
A Gateway fmcp7am motherboard
Nvidia geforce gts 450 graphics card,
an Intel 2 quad 2.33ghz cpu
8gb ddr2 ram

It has been enough to run the games I am currently playing on high settings (Diablo 3, Skyrim, Starcraft 2). I amhoping an upgrade to possibly one of those (like a new GPU) would be all that is needed, as I am sure several of them would cost more than a new pc. So what truly needs upgrading in my system or should I just ditch it??

if you are planning to use the same...
A new GPU would be a notable improvement over the GTS 450. What CPU do you have? The motherboard model indicates it is an older LGA 775 board which means your CPU would be rather slow by todays standards, the core i series are significantly better than Core 2 Quads at the same clock speed.

if you are planning to use the same motherboard make sure that you have the latest BIOS
upgrade the CPU to core 2 quad Q9650 (if BIOS supports)
and I also recommend upgrading the graphics card
it will be powerful but not perfect
