Looking for SSD Drive

Hello, I have been experiencing loud noised from the computer. The little light on my computer flashed when in makes a noise. So I got told it was the Hard Drive. Also, it is also louder when the disk is high (100%) It makes this really loud and annoying clanking noise.

I got told that I could get a new hard drive or install windows onto an SSD drive. Since SSD's are fast, I am looking for one that would be able to install windows and run everything fast, and my other hard drive as a spare. I am looking for a SSD which is cheap and can install windows fine. I don't care if it just installs windows, I mainly want it so I don't hear really loud clanking and so my PC is faster.

If I couldn't get an SSD then should I get another hard drive? I would rather have an SSD if it is faster and better. And can I keep the hard drive I currently have or will I need to get rid of it?

Thank you!!!

Hello,

Definitely get an SSD as your Windows/Boot drive, as it will speed your system up noticeably!
Something like this will do the trick

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178455 PNY XLR8 120GB SATA SSD ~$60.00

There should be no issues using your hard drive as a 2nd storage drive in system, as 95% of systems have multiple SATA ports.

Hope this helps

P.S. On a side note, download Seagate Seatools or Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and test your existing hard drive, if it fails the test(s), replace it or send in for warranty if it has one (check manufacturer website for warranty status)

Thank you very much! Is there maybe possibly a cheaper one? Like 60gb maybe? Would that work still? And maybe a cheaper one from amazon. Thats where I like to get things from. Thanks :D

Ok, thank you so much. And about the really loud noise. Is that definatly the hard drive? And if I install an SSD then will it not make that noise. It seems that when the HDD is under full load, there is a loud noise coming off it and the light flashes. If I do get this SSD and install windows onto it, would it stop making that noise but still be able to use the HDD? Or what? Since this noise is very irritating. Also, I done a quick scan with the Western Digital one and it said it was fine.

Hello again,

Not 100% that it is the hard drive, it could also be a fan(s) inside computer that increase speed when system is under load (being worked)

Run the Full scan on the hard drive, or even run Check Disk through windows and see if the sound is consistent throughout those tests...those tests do not really create load on system CPU so it should help to verify if its the hard drive or a fan(s) making the noise

Hope this helps

I have ran the Windows check, and it said it was fine. The full system check will take ages, and when doing it, the noise got really loud so I stopped doing it. I am pretty sure that it is the hard drive. Because right now it is quite, but it can get loud at any time. I can hear the fans quietly whirling in the background.

You want 64gb, right? Then you can use this one ($39 & free shipping from amazon): SanDisk 64GB SATA 6.0GB/s 2.5-Inch 7mm Height Solid State Drive (SSD) With Read Up To 475MB/s- SDSSDP-064G-G25

You save $40 (original price-$79). It's good & faster than an old clanking hard drive.
OR
You can also use an intel 120 gb ssd for $96 and free shipping: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-SSDSC2BW120A401-120GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00F0RD3ZM/

But shall I am asking should I keep this hard drive? Shall I install windows onto the SSD drive and the HDD can be for more storage which I will be using to store games. Will it still be clanking or will it just run off the SSD drive and no sound from the HDD?

Ok, I know that, but will installing Windows onto a SSD drive stop the loud noise? I am wanting to keep the HDD aswell so I can have a lot of storage space. Will the noise continue? I have seen somewhere that it might be fualty and I might have to just throw it away. What do you think? I found something here called a SSHD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Laptop-Solid-State-Hybrid/dp/B00BHRWHNI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401280108&sr=8-1&keywords=1tb+sshd

It is crossed between a hard drive and ssd. It says it is a hard drive which has similar speeds to a ssd. If I have to get rid of my HDD I might get that.

no it will not stop the noise ,
the ssd is silent so booting up your OS and whatever you run from the ssd will be silent. as soon as you use the HDD which is where the noise is coming from the noise will return because it is what is making the noise
i suggest getting another HDD at some point in the future and replacing the noisy drive as it may be on its way out

You should install new Windows 8 on the new ssd, but for storage you can still keep the HDD. Buy a SATA to USB Cable: http://www.amazon.com/USB-SATA-5-25-Cable-Adapter/dp/B000YJBL78 (very cheap but slow) and then connect the old hdd to the SATA port in the cable and then connect the usb plug to your pc. (It still, will make noise)Then you can access it as a pendrive. If you want safer and usb 3.0 cable the use the following: http://www.apricorn.com/sata-wire-3.html . It also comes with a CD, which can clone you old hdd's content to your new ssd, so that you dont have to wate time installing windows, programs and doing all those things. Suggestion- buy a new hdd later, as the death of your old hdd is not far away.

SSDs are much faster than SSHDs.
