Looking for answer why computer no longer recgonizes scanner

I have a HP C6280 Photosmart All in One that I have had for several years with no problems. Sat down yesterday to use the scanner and received a message that the computer no longer recognizes the scanner it needs to be connected. This is strange since the printer function works. I loaded the HP software again, and I have turned off both computer and printer/scanner and rebooted and still have the same problem. I have no clue what to do next.
