Hi, I recently got a new motherboard, only to realise after I built my system that you have to reinstall the os for it to work properly with a new chipset. I have been told to backup my hard drive and do a clean install, but my hard drive has 1tb of data on it and also I would very much like to keep my current desktop, settings etc.
I have a friend willing to led me his hard drive with Windows 7 on it also (he has the same chipset as me now) so if I can update the chipset on my hard drive whilst in his windows that would be ideal.
Any help appreciated.

With me, when I put in new hardware inside my computer (Motherboard, RAM, Processor, GPU), it didn't prompt me to do a clean install.

Put your new motherboard, keep your Hard drive inside without touching it and all is well.
If you do re-install or upgrade, Windows will place a folder called Windows.old specifying your previous files so that you can recover them :)

If you need more help please ask.
