I am building a computer and I had an old compact disc drive lying around, and as my budget doesn't stretch far enough to buy a dvd drive I will be using this.
I just wanted to know if I could burn Ubuntu onto a DVD+R disc and if this compact disc drive would be fine reading it.
Its this one: http://www.ktclear.in/siteadmin/TechImages/CD-ROM.jpg

Any replies are appreciated.

You can burn Ubuntu to a disc and install. The Ubuntu site has a guide on how to do that: https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/installing-fr...

Is the old disc drive a DVD drive? If it is a really old drive, it may not be able to read DVD discs. There should be a DVD icon on the face of the drive. If it is a DVD drive and you end up following the instructions on the Ubuntu site, you should have no issue. Make sure you select the optical drive as the boot drive when installing.

Alternatively you could install from USB if you have a spare USB memory stick laying around.

No; CD drives can't read DVDs.

However, some of the Ubuntu variants fit on a CD, e.g. Lubuntu (you can then install the Unity environment, or any other), or you can use a Minimal CD, which then downloads the extra content at install time.

You can also use a USB stick of at least 1GiB.

thanks for the reply. On the face of the drive all it has is the compact disc logo. I might just do it with the usb stick.
