Which is better for a 17.3 inch laptop screen, 1600x900 or 1920x1080. Laptop HP envy comes with nvidia GT-740m graphics and core-i7 4700mq, 8 gb RAM, but I am not a gamer. Just mostly browsing, and some photos and videos. I will be installing some miscrosoft visual studio and database software on it.

Also, I currently have a 16.4 inch 1600x900 sony vaio, and I find the resolution really good for the 16.4 inch screen. Will 1600x900 look bad on a 17.3 inch screen? The 1920x1080 will cost me 100 dollars extra. Is the higher resolution noticeable on a 17.3 inch screen?

1920 equals higher pixels per inch, which means less boxy fuzzy stuff. Web browsing is actually (other than photo editing) one of the most noticeable things to compare 720 vs 1080. As all the words or anything (especially white background black letters) will appear more jagged on 720, where the 1080 it will look a lot smoother.

That said, its all personal preference But normally 1080 vs 720 screen equals less than $100 more of a laptop. In my opinion, yes better and totally worth the 1080. Especially if you getting a separate dedicated graphics card with the laptop (yes its not a top end), but why would you want to get a beefy graphics card and push a crappy screen. You'd be better off with onboard graphics without a NVidia card and...

You'd be better off with onboard graphics without a NVidia card and push to a 1080p screen. Haswell graphics are actually really good, not as good as the 740m, but theyre good. So if decision means 1080p and no graphics card, or 720p and a graphics card, you'll be happier with 1080p screen and no graphics card. Plus hp does make some nice looking screens, shame not to have one.
