My main concern is that this cpu/gpu will become obsolete quickly. Thoughts?

This will my first time upgrading a computer, so would anyone have tips for beginners, or things I need to keep in mind? I will be upgrading a completely stock inspiron 530 with these parts, any reason why it wouldn't work?

Um no, I do not believe the 760 will go obsolete that fast, I use a GTX 460 768MB and play Tribes Ascend, War Thunder and Goat Simulator at ultra with no lag. That CPU will be fine for a while, but you could find one that does not have integrated graphics and save the money, using it for a better CPU.

If you're worried about your CPU/GPU getting obsolete quickly, there's a few things you could consider.

That being said, an i5 will still last you a fairly long time, even first gen i5s are usable by today's standards; they may not be the best, but they still work.

And again, for the GPU, people are still using 460s and 2xx series GPUs, it all depends on the user. If you're perfectly fine with playing on low graphics settings, then the PC should last a long, long time.

What is the exact model of that Inspiron? Are you sure the motherboard has an LGA1150 socket?

I hope you are planning to upgrade the PSU too.

So poped it open, and it turns out that no, it does not have a LGA1150 socket. It appears to have a 775 socket instead. I didn't realize this would actually be a problem. What do I do? Is there something of power that will fit the 775 socket?

Sorry, there's not. You are looking at a new motherboard and CPU, a fresh install of Windows and a call to Microsoft about reactivating your product key.

If you wnat precise info about your computer, read this:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3...

I would say if you got a core 2 duo version with the 300W psu, you are pretty much screwed (and return to Eduello's solution).
If not, and you got a quad core version and 375W PSU, you should be able to upgrade to q6700 (or similar, no 45nm quads supported apparently) and take a 7750 or similar graphics card (I would keep a low power, under 75W graphics card)... It does feature the appropriate slot! Can you tell what processor you have (shows up under system in your control panel)

Ow. Well I guess I gotta take a look at motherboards then. Recommendations?
