I purchased a GTX 770 2Gb last week, and after seeing how Watchdogs pretty much fills 2GB VRAM, decided I should trade up and get more VRAM

So I was looking about and can get a 770 with 4GB for £290 and was wondering if it is worth the extra £80 for 780 with 3GB

I know it is a fair bit more powerful than the 770, but my main concern is VRAM - with BF4 preferring 3GB, and now watchdogs requiring 3GB for Ultra, I am of the mind that all games will start following suit in the coming year or two.

Now I am thinking that the 770 with 4GB will be a better buy, as the VRAM will give the most longevity. By that I am comparing it to how watchdogs runs on my rig, as on ultra settings with only shadows turned down to high, and using Temporal AA I average 50 fps, with odd drops to 40's and jumps over 65 which then introduces tearing. With a bit more VRAM I could have all ultra and be happy with the performance.

I am running single monitor at 1080p

End of the day I will be selling the 770 2GB at a loss after only a week, so reluctant to spend even more on a 780 with only 3GB...

Thoughts please

If you want more VRAM, an AMD card seems like a better idea. The R9 280X costs about the same as the 2GB GTX 770, but has 3GB VRAM. The R9 290 costs less than the GTX 780, but has 4GB instead of 3.

From what I have read the AMD cards are a fair bit weaker than the Nvidia counterparts?

In fairness I pretty much want to stick with Nvidia

the 290 and 780 as well and the 770 and 280x are pretty much equal.

@ 1080p 3GB will do just fine for games, from what I am reading DX12 is going to be even more proficient with Vram usage. People will say skyrim with lots of mods uses allot of memory, I don’t think it’s going to cause major problems when it comes to your FPS though. I don't think you will have any issues running one monitor with a 3GB 780 for the next couple of years… But if you absolutely need to have more Vram then take a look at the 6GB 780 it is $550, IMO major overkill for a single 1080p monitor though.
