Hi,

I'm trying to assemble a reasonable gaming pc, for my son.
He will be playing Battlefield 4, Watch dogs, Wolfenstein ( the new one ).

He is upgrading from a 3-4 year old dell laptop.

He has an average 23" 1920x1080 monitor.

Would it make sense to pay 30% extra for a gtx-770. ( the gtx-760, comes with watch dogs).

Buying the gtx-760, also lets me get 16 Gb instead of 8 GB, 2400mhz ram.

Making it possible for a nice ramdisk, and hopefully a longer lifespan of the SSD.

I'm hooked on NVidia, because he wants a shield.

Any suggestions?

8GB ram is enough as stated above.
But consider the R9 280X. It seems the future games are pushing people to get higher vram cards by limiting graphic options by measuring vram on the gpu. Wolfenstein New Order does this and Watchdogs too.
If you want to stick to Nvidia, although i don;t normally recommend the 4GB model of the GTX 770 but it is an option.

Personally I would go for the GTX 770 over the 16 GB ram, if the PC is for gaming. 16 GB's of 2400 mhz ram is expensive as all hell.
Then again I have no experience with ramdisks.
