I don't feel as though crossfire is working too well...

Hi,

Crossfire isn't exactly pleasing me as I'm not getting the results that I had intended to...
My FPS has hardly increased....

Watch dogs everything ultra I get around 30fps
If I put everything to medium or low, believe it or not, that fps hardly changes (I know this is a new game, but even so, I'm sure the fps is meant to be higher...).

Crysis 3 Ultra High with no msaa around 60fps, but with one R9 290 I was getting around 40fps with these settings.

The GPU usage seems to fluctuate quite a lot.... is this meant to happen?

AMD Driver: 14.4
Latest windows updates.

Also, I thought the clock rate of the higher card was meant to down-clock itself to match the lower card? This hasn't seem to have happened and I don't know if it's affecting performance.

XFX Card: 947/1250
Sapphire Card: 1000/1300

Any suggestions?

Edit: forgot to mention that I have v-sync off.

Regards,
Jared.

There's a newer AMD driver that was released with this particular game in mind that should help: 14.6 beta. It's the driver all the reviews were done on.

EDIT: This is what Tom's Hardware had to say about the drivers:

"Drivers are a huge deal when a game first comes out, and we made it a point to test using the very latest software from both companies. Nvidia gave us early access to its 337.88 build, while AMD sent over Catalyst 14.6 Beta, both including optimizations for Watch Dogs. Indeed, AMD's performance went up quite a bit under the new driver; it was fairly dismal with 14.4."

if you have a 60hz screen and v-sync on it can limit your fps to 60, Im fairly sure in the future you should get identical cards as its only when you get different one errors start coming up. Maybe try checking if both GPU's are recognized and you can control something like the fan speed on both

That was a good point.
Previously, when selecting either GPU 1 or GPU 2 in afterburner, it'd display their independent clock/memory rates. I checked again and it seems that both GPUs are now at 1000/1300 so it seems the lower card has clocked itself higher to keep up with the faster card.

Edit: I checked GPU-Z as well and the actual clock 1000/1300 is different from the default clock of 947/1250 so it seems it did overclock itself... xD

I tested it by controlling the fan speed. I wasn't able to do it independently; if I increased GPU 1 fan speed to 100%, it would do the same to GPU 2. If I tried it the other way round by only increasing GPU 2, it'd increase GPU 1 to 100% as well. I guess it's because the cards are synced.

Is this ok? or am I still meant to be able to control the fan speed individually regardless of whether they're synced or not?

no no, That was just a test to make sure if you could actually control them. You could try underclocking your faster one to the slower ones speed and see if them being in sync changes anything but I doubt it. If I was you I would just overclock both of them until my temp started getting a little high, lower it to a safe region then try out playing WD and stuff

edit: just don't do it to much, your PSU might die...
