Solution
MSI Z97 Gaming 7 is better in every single way.

Gaming 7 has better component quality. Better capacitors, little bit more efficient powerpak mosfets (must be around 40A@6.5W) and it also has more mosfets than z97-A since it has more power phases.

Z97 Gaming 7 has better and more complex power regulation. z97A has 4 true phase vrm with a double (or virtual) driver and Asus renamed the controller in a very suspicious way. So noone knows it's actual manufacturer. They decided to hide it... But it's certain that it is not a higher-end digital controller from International Rectifier like last generation. It's just subpar and probably a hybrid... Z97 Gaming 7, on the other hand, has a 6 true phase hybrid/analog controller with a doubler...

MSI didn't want to hide what they use here.

Z97 Gaming 7 has way way way better sound chip and nichicon caps. Two mobos not even comparable in terms of sound quality.

Gaming 7 also has more sata, more usb etc..

Don't even think twice. MSI Gaming 7 is one of the best boards you can find in that price range. Even better than Asus Z97 Ranger.

Unless you can afford HERO, Gaming 7 is one of the best choices here. You also can check Gigabyte's Gaming series, which employs slightly better vrm than MSI's offerings.

Just stay away from ASRock, since they are just lying about their products, false marketing all around on their website...

That's why Asrock is very cheap in my country, Z97 Extreme4 sell for RM579 when obviously their VRM are still analog and digital. Not to mention their caps are still of unacceptable quality

I would not recommend both Z97-A and MSI Z97 Gaming 7 though, I would choose the Z97X Gaming 7 from Gigabyte (True 8 phase power design). If you are choosing a ASUS I would recommend Asus Z97-Pro (Wifi-AC)

Thank you so much for your answer. I was getting worried for a second that maybe I needed to rethink my current first choice in Motherboards (MSI Z97-Gaming 7) After reading through many MSI vs ASUS threads it seemed my choice for my next build was going to have to be scrapped and I'd have to start research all over again. There seem to be many comments about ASUS having better reliability and customer service etc.

I had an ASUS board back in the early quad core days that shorted out had to be replaced and continued having problems with that so I kind of cringe when I think of ASUS though most people say they are really good boards and I've had a few good ones since that one bad build. I was planning on an MSI 787 G65 until the new ones came out now I am planning on their Z97 Gaming 7 with i7 4790k processor bundle from Microcenter or newegg. I had heard their boards have been getting better and offer really strong features for overclocking and tuning. I also noticed most custom PC builder websites utilize ASUS as their standard boards for their builds and only a few offer the MSI boards as alternates so that also had me a little worried. I planned on getting an MSI 770 or 780 GPU to go with this new build so want the two to play extremely well with each other. - www.djemir.com

Hi m8!

I hope you still active in the forum and you will see my reply.

As far as i noticed you have done prety good research and you have knowhow on OC.
I will go straight to the point and ask you a kind consulting for the below motherboard:

SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 2

Does this motherboard also have 4 true phase vrm with a double (or virtual) driver?
