so I've decided its time to upgrade my current video card (HD 5850) to an R9 290X and then got to thinking well maybe just build a whole new machine but thought i should ask first.

so my current setup is an i7 980x on an Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard, first built this system back in 2011.

The 4790k is about 19% faster in single-core performance than the 980X. Substantial to be sure, but hardly "smokes it"

I plan on upgrading my video card soon as well and I have no intention of upgrading my 980X at this moment in time. It's just not necessary yet.

Like every CPU the 980X will be a dinosaur someday, but that day is still a long way off (in computer yrs). It has barely even begun the long march to the tar pits.

In-fact the 980X still does better in video creation (the main reason many of us bought it) than the modern day 6 core equivalent or predecessor the 4960X.

Keep your CPU it's still very relevant.
The 980x still thrives in multicore gaming, though a 4790k smokes it in single-core performance. But since you can overclock your CPU, then hang on to it for now since it was a big investment. Get a GTX 780 Ti or R9-290X and you will be fine, even in SLI or Crossfire.
