Might have short circuited the motherboard or the cpu

Hey guys,

I think I have really stuffed up my computer (and this was fixing a stuff-up that I already made!). I finally got my desktop working again after changing over to a new motherboard & cpu, it is all plugged in and working fine, running off a linux live cd.

For some stupid stupid reason, I put back in one of the metal covers on the back where you can put extra cards it when it was still running (I know, very dumb and I almost deserved to get a shock) - this is why you don't do these things at 4am!. It must have just touched the motherboard or the graphics card. Power went to straight away. When I switch it back on everything powers up, the little light on the motherboard comes on, all the fans run, I can hear the cd drives whirling, I think I get a red light when it turns on (not so sure), but no graphics output. Don't hear any beeps. I don't get a light for pressing reset, but it does actually do the reset.

How do I work out what I have fried - the mobo, cpu, or graphics card?

Other than the graphics, I don't have any spare parts to put in just to see.

Thanks.

Ok, I've put in the old graphics card, but that didn't make a difference. I also put in an old PSU, but again, no difference.

I do get the red light on the front panel on start-up when I press the button, but no consistent power light.

I get a beep from the internal speaker when I press re-set, and do see the red light on the front panel when I do it.

If front panel controls are working, does that mean the mobo is ok? How can I tell the difference between a fried CPU or a fried motherboard?
