Hey guys,

This is my current router. I got free with Telus.
actiontec v1000h router

I have no clue if it's bad or good, but a friend of mine said I should buy a new router for around 70$.

Can you guys suggest some, also tell me why I should get a router, I know NOTHING about routers. (I have 50 mbps internet) Will my internet be better?.

I use wifi for phone + ps4 only.

Thanks!

Make sure you are getting what you pay for. Run speed test across your devices and make sure you are getting ~50Mbps or the max bandwidth allowed by the device. If you are not, you should consider a nice router. The ~$70 range is perfect for the next 2 to 3 years.

Also check the range on your router, be sure it encompasses the full area you would like it to. A nice router will help achieve this distance as well. Run speed test at the farthest point you need to access your wifi. You still want to be achieving at or close to your 50Mbps.

50Mbps is quite fast for normal gaming use. You could probably save a lot of money if you can step down to 20Mbps which is still plenty fast.

Nicer routers are built to last; they have better quality...

Nicer routers are built to last; they have better quality parts, more software features, and more efficient routing through ports, protocols and just a better automated QoS in general.

Do you have problems with internet or WiFi now?

As a practical matter, the best way to improve your WiFi is to get the access point as close to the center of usage as practical. Even a great router in a far corner of a house can have problems. Another way is to make sure you have a the clearest channel available in your location. Both cable and DSL modems have some flexibility on where they are placed in your home.

The best thing an new router could get you is the 5Ghz WiFi. If your devices can use it, that might clear whatever interference you may be experiencing.

I know this isn't your question, but if it is just you with your two devices, I agree with the above, if you can save some money by down rating your service, I'd give that a try too.
