I have a dilemma which I would like your opinion on: Should I get the i5-4670k or the i7-4770. I would go straight for the i7, but it's not unlocked and I'm not sure if I need to overclock - I do a bit of gaming, and a bit of video/photo editing.

Hope you can help.

It's not very easy to mess up a CPU when overclocking, unless you are extremely careless, and dont give a crap about your computer. Tom's Hardware has some tutorials on Overclocking, so if overclocking abilities is what you want, there is tons of information on the internet about that subject. The i7 4770 will cover your gaming and multitasking needs for years to come, before it becomes obsolete.

Unless you're a tweaker, you won't need to overclock to gain performance in games for a long time. I believe games will start using the logical cores this gen, you'll be fine with the 4770. Remember, the i7 4770 has a boost clock of 3.9 GHz, so you get a small overclock right out of the gate.

I always get a bit nervous when considering overclocking, because I don't want to mess it up, so would the i7 be capable of everything I need it to do for the next few years?

Ok, thank you for your help - I'll go with the i7

The Xeon E3-1230V3 is practically an i7-4770, but it's marketed as a 'server processor'. There are a few differences:

1. The Xeon supports ECC memory (this is a plus, albeit an unnecessary one).
2. It has no integrated graphics (doesn't matter since you're going to be using a dedicated GPU, right?)
3. It has a 0.1GHz slower clock speed (~3% difference in performance).
4. It's about $50 cheaper.

Conclusion: Get the Xeon E3-1230V3 over the i7-4770.
