Despite numourous guides I'm struggling to find stability overclocking to 4.0

CPU - AMD 8320 3.5
MoBoard - Gigabyte 990FXA UD3
PSU - 750W

Going off of guides the ratio I'm trying to go for is:
4.0Ghz - 1.400V

but the second I apply any changes my theme downgrades to Aero and dragging windows around becomes clunky and slow, regardless of whether I up or lower the voltage it doesn't seem to fix this and when I restart my system explorer.exe stops responding and requires another restart to fix itself.

is my MoBoard not cut out for OCing? or does anyone have the same/similar setup and has had success with overclocking that can give me a hand?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Your MoBo is fine provided it is an early revision or revision 4.0.

There was an in-between rev. 2 or 3 I think that had a dinky, flat NorthBridge heatsink. these had heat issues.

I would only use AMd Overdrive for stress testing. Tweak your OC settings in the BIOS.

This is one of the best guides I have found. Read it through before you start on your own machine:

Not sure how I post a reply but I guess I will just use this box

I've read this guide before and it's rather overwhelming to someone like myself who doesn't know a great deal about overclocking hence why I resorted to OverDrive (which I regret now because despite my CPU speeds appearing as though they've reset, explorer.exe continues to stop responding on startup and I'm not sure how to fix this)

I don't wish to delve into the complex side of overclocking, I just wish to bump up to 4.0, have it stable and be done with it, at least for now till I get a greater understanding/become more confident of overclocking
