I have, at the moment, 3 external HDD's connected directly to my laptop. I will be setting up my new PC (running OpenSuse and Windows 7 Ultimate in dual boot) in about a week. I have another 2 external drives that are not being used at the moment.

I want to use a switch to connect the laptop and PC and still be able to access the external HDD's, regardless of what OS I am using at the time. I know that it's possible that if I am using Win 7 on the PC then accessing the HDD's attached to the laptop is not a problem. My question is, if I am using Linux can I access the HDD's that are attached to the laptop?

I have seen USB-Ethernet adapters and I was wondering if I could attach the external USB HDD's directly to the switch using such an adaptor?

You can't use a USB-ethernet adapter, those allow you to connect an ethernet cable to a usb port on your computer.

If it is a closed network you could use samba to share the media folder. If you connect to the net make sure that you firewall, password and user the samba permissions.
What you need is some kind of a server or NAS where to connect the drives. Although I am not sure why you need to have five external drives connected thru USB, though.

I don't know what kind of USB-Ethernet adapters you've seen, most probably they act as a server as well for a single drive, but managing five of them would be a nightmare.
