For games now i5-3570k is the best. (better performance per core)
Price/performance wise the FX-8350.
Future-proof: probably the FX-8350 as games will use more then 4 cores in the future.
Either one is a good pick it just depends on your budget/needs.

There's no such thing as future proofing. The 8350 will be on par with the i5 in some games, but in a majority of games, the i5 will be the better pick. You should definitely be looking at the i5-4690k instead though.

Are you tying to threaten him? :p
Why would you regret going for an i5 it is a good CPU but only if you budget can handle it, otherwise the FX-8350 is a very good pick.

Even if the 8350 has very weak single core performance it still crushes the 4670. If he wants single core performance he should get windows 3.1

He wants a gaming CPU so singe core performance matters here. I recon that the FX-8350 crushes the i5 4670K but only if you use all cores, and in games this is not the case. So if you want the best performance in games go with the i5 4670K,
if you are on a budget and still want a good gaming processor get the FX-8350.
Also the Intel uses less power so needs less cooling to OC. Less power usage is always good, as you don't need to spend so much money on cooling.

you will not notice that intel gets 5 more fps in 4 threaded games but you will notice that amd gets 30 more fps in 8 threaded games.
The 8350 is not a budget CPU, the fact that intel is overpriced doesnt mean that what's cheaper than it is also slower, you know. The 4670 is a mid range CPU, the 8350 is an enthusiast cpu

Guys, both are great for their own purposes. The 8350 will benefit him more than the 4670K for future games that can properly utilize all 8 cores. It is also less expensive and competes with the intel cpu quite well.

However, does that mean that by the time games that use 8 cores comes around; everyone with a 4 core Intel cpu now is obsolete vs an AMD 8 core? No, 4 core is still plenty strong to push games and the limiting factor will still be the GPU.

Yes, the Intel CPU uses less power and generates less heat in comparison to the AMD CPU.
Yes, the Intel CPU has an IGPU if you want to have a second monitor for misc. windows in the future without burdening your GPU.
Yes, the Intel CPU will run all (non extraneous) programs faster than the 8350 based on the single core performance.

When games use 8 cores, the 8 cores of AMD help but still rely on the strength of the GPU. While Intel may have 4 cores for the game that can use 8, it will not be the bottleneck of the system.

This is not the place to bicker over AMD vs Intel.
Explain to him why they are both great and let him make the final choice.

My choice is with the Intel CPU.

Epic troll.

Please please please provide evidence of that bold claim. A quad core i5 will outperform an FX 83xx in every game, except for a few instances in Crysis 3. The FX doesn't hold a candle to the i5 in 99% of instances. When all 8 threads are utilised it occasionally matches the i5. Even games that use 8 threads are scarce.

OP, get the i5. No contest.

Call me uneducated, but could you point to a game that utilizes 8 cores, and how you are getting these FPS numbers? Looking at benchmarks, games that favor strong single cores (Skyrim, MMOs, usually some multiplayer games) have the i5 3570k/4670k at stock speeds getting anywhere from 30%-50% more FPS than a 4.5 GHz 8350.

It highly depends on what games he plays. An Intel will handle every game with great performance, an 8350 will do so in games that can utilize 6+ cores. High end Intel CPUs have always been for enthusiasts, and I still regard AMD CPUs as the mid-level budget friendly solution.

If your looking to get the most bang for your buck AMD might be the choice for you. This choice looks even more promising if you free up funds for a more robust GPU by buying a lower cost AMD CPU. The future of gaming is definitely in more cores, with new consoles sporting 6 core AMD processors. We could start seeing developers offering software that takes advantage of multi-core power sooner rather than later, . There is a chance in near future that we will see the gaming performance gap between AMD and Intel start to tighten for this reason. From the PC owner's perspective however, you do have to remember that the upgrade path for the AM3+ socket is a dead end. Any upgrade you do beyond the current product offering will require a new motherboard with a new socket. The Intel chip is not only better on most of today's games but will provide you with some upgrade options in the future.

If you love the under-dog and like to see the guy in the sleek shiny Corvette [now with eco-boost ; P] get passed on the highway by the guy in the hot-running power guzzling muscle car. Get the AMD it might just scratch that itch for you in the near future. If you like to play it safe get the I5.
