Is it better to use a VGA/DVI-D adapter or go straight VGA cord for a monitor?

I have a 2nd monitor I want to hook up to my Desktop but the main monitor I have is already using a DVI port on the video card. the Video card has a HDMI and a VGA port left, the 2nd monitor has DVI-D (with cord) and a VGA port on it. so should I get an adapter or just get a straight VGA cord? An Adapter is cheaper but I figured that is upscaling and might not look as good as a straight VGA cord...

Solution

Purchase an HDMI to DVI-D passive adapter.

That's correct.

HDMI and Single-Link DVI-D are electrically identical and are pin-compatible. Most graphics cards use the same hardware for both and pick the appropriate logical interface on a per-connection basis. Some graphics cards and IGPs allow for audio to be transferred over DVI-D as a result. The only difference is the shape of the connector.
