I decided to update my AMD drivers to 14.6 to test it's new Mantle capabilities with my R9 270x. After installing the drivers and restarting my computer, I booted up BF4, enabled Mantle, restarted BF4 (as directed), and set the graphics to ultra to see how it worked.

Not only did I not notice any increase in a graphics performance (around 40-60 FPS), but after about 2 minutes, the framerate would consistently drop to around 20-30 FPS before crashing.

I tested the framerate using the built int perfoverlay FPS display as well as the perfoverlay CPU/GPU graph. I noticed that my FX-6300 appeared to be struggling a lot. The yellow CPU line on the graph continuously had massive spikes off the screen. When the FPS dropped to around 20-30 FPS consistently, the yellow line appeared to be spiking far more often.

I would assume this means that my CPU is bottlenecking for some reason, but I have no idea what it could be. Please help!

Max temps reached around 65-70 C for both CPU and GPU (according to OpenHardwareMonitor).

Here's what I was seeing in terms of that graph btw:

DX11 stays well within that graph the entire time when enabled.

idk much about Mantle, not sure why you depend on it either. You card for one is pretty weak maybe AMD hasn't optmized for your card(really stupid guess tbh) I can't be sure. My best bet is try it without Mantle and see if the problem persists seeing as how you just installed the driver and went straight to mantle. the problem could be from the driver itself

I don't "need" to use Mantle. I've just read reviews by others with 270x's that have claimed significant performance increases when using it. I originally upgraded to driver version 14.4, and that's when I started having the problem. So I decided to upgrade again to 14.6 (currently in beta) and the problem still persisted.

With just DX11 there is absolutely no problem in performance. I plan to upgrade my card soon anyways (I have some extra money to spend). Until then, I would like to see if I can get Mantle to work as advertised.

EDIT: Prior to the 14.4 upgrade I was using a version 13.x (before Mantle was released).

My question is though have you tried DX11 with the 14.6 update? From what I'm seeing you just went straight to mantle after updating.

Yes DX11 runs fine in 14.6. I tested both because I was appalled by Mantle's performance.

I'm still having big problems with this. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

Here's an even better example of what's going on:

And here's the same server and same settings but with DX11:

DX11 runs silky smooth, but it doesn't reach an average FPS of 60 on ultra which is why I've been trying to make Mantle work.

your cpu and gpu are well matched so I don't think you will get much more performance without a hardware upgrade

I'm just surprised it's causing such a huge dip in performance, though. Could it be that Mantle is still not optimized for the 270x?

I am fairly certain there is no 14.7. Do you have a link I can follow?

Mantle is working just fine for me. But I'm also not noticing any better performance then dx11.

Here is a graph of testing with mantle for different versions of cards.

There might be something else going on with your system. I would contact the manufacturer of your gpu for troubleshooting. It should be working fine, but it could have something g to do with the version of your card.

I think I'm just gonna try calling PowerColor and see what they suggest. I'm selling this card in a few days anyways, but I really don't want to be knowingly selling a defective product. Fingers crossed it's just something stupid I'm doing.
