both are great boards and both are as good as each other, I would suggest the one choose the motherboard that you like the look of best (colour), as that may play a role in your decision.

nope, if you aren't overclocking and you don't plan to go multiple GPU configurations later on, you can get a motherboard for far less that'll do the exact same job.

I liked the hero because of the in built sound card as well. Which other boards will give me the same performance?

others will if you buy an internal PCIe sound card.

So is it better to just go with the hero? despite me not overclocking? or buy another motherboard and a sound card. can you suggest any?

Your choice, Some would say the Hero, I would stick with the Hero also. If you even decide to overclock down the road if you have a "k" processor, it will be an even better choice.

For a motherboard and even better audio you'd want this;

ASRock Z87 Extreme6

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Rx 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Express x1

All in all, i would also still prefer the HERO, a solid choice.

if your looking for a 120GB SSD, then get this;

Samsung are one of the best suppliers of SSD's, and they don't tend to corrupt as easily.

never get a poor primary component if you have other stronger primary components, i.e. Never get a poor CPU with a powerful GPU.

HERO's SupremeFX is just a marketing gimmick. It's actually a renamed Realtek ALC 1150. Both MSI and Gigabyte use the same audio codec. And actually they use better quality Nichicon caps like the ones on the professional sound cards. Performance wise they are all similar in terms of snr which is around 100-115. Actually only MSI manage to hit 115db snr with this codec atm. So they do a bit better. But not like a day&night.

If you want a better audio solution Gigabyte G.1 Sniper z97 offers by far the best audio. It has a quad core Creative sound core 3d audio processor and nichicon caps. Others are not comparable with this one. It's also cheaper than HERO, since Sniper's VRM is tad less powerful. But it's enough for air/water overclocking. But since you don't plan to overclock it's not important.

So all in all buy G.1 Sniper z97 if you want great audio and good overall quality.
