I bought my ASUS S46C 15 inch laptop last year and in the past few months I have been experiencing a strange keyboard issue. At seemingly random times, several random keys will become completely unresponsive.

I feel it is not a hardware issue considering the keys will work fine all day except for a few minutes here and there. For example, my 'l' 'f' 'j' 's' key just stopped working for about 3 minutes, now they are obviously working fine again. Sometimes its for more than a few minutes and can be a nuisance.

I've also noticed sometimes holding the key down for a while will fix it. I'm wondering if theirs some sort of process I can reboot when this happens or what is wrong?!

Damn. I have the same problem. Is so strange. To me, it happens with the keys 6, 7, y, u, h, j, n, m. I have an Asus n750jv. Is horrible and frustrating. I have been reading about this issue but is difficult to find a solution.

In some webs is said that is a numlock problem, solved by pressing for long (holding) the keys, or pressing the function key (fn) or installing a .vbs script. I still trying to solve it. By now, is inestable. I mean, sometimes it works and other nop.

I paste the link refered in other post to this issue. I hope it works to you.

After reading around and trying to solve the problem i've determined it probably is a loose connection or shorting of some sort. I'm going to send it into ASUS because it is still under warranty, i just fear they'll have to replace the whole laptop and/or it wont be ready come fall semester.

SOLVED: My daughters Asus had this problem, some keys working some don't.
I ordered a new keyboard no surprise the same problem.

So it seems the problem is either the keyboard ribbon cable is picking up interference from the main board, or that the folding of the ribbon cable is causing it to interfere with itself.

The cure is using a thin layer of plastic cover any exposed components and tape it down, celotape is ideal as it is very thin.
Then get some regular kitchen foil cut a strip the length of the ribbon cable upto to curve in the cable and just over two times the width, wrap this around the cable length ways so it wraps around both sides of the cable.
Refit the keyboard and the problem should be fixed.

The reason the foil works is because it acts as a shield against interference.

Cheers Chris

Same issue here. Keys Y - U - H - J - N
In addition, pressing left Shift key with n doesn't produce a N (but right shift works) and pressing right Shift key with " , " (comma, located right after the N key on french keyboards) to produce a " ? " doesn't work either, but left shift works though.

Plugging in an usb external keyboard works like a charm.

So it's definitely a hardware issue.

I heard people send their laptop under warranty to Asus for a 2 week period only to get the same issue once again some time later....

Shame cause this laptop is really good otherwise.

Similar problem here. Asus Q550. n, space, enter, and other keys not functioning, until being pressed for over 5 seconds. Out of stock replacement keyboard. No warranty. Everything is updated...
Gave up. Purchased a Bluetooth keyboard. No Bluetooth. Looked for the solution online and solved the problem. Bluetooth keyboard working fine.
Here's the funny part: the laptop's keyboard is now functioning just fine, and has been doing so for many weeks now.
I have no idea what happened. Just hoping somebody can find this useful.

I had a problem where half the keyboard was just numbers. Restarting the computer didnt help. The onscreen keyboard worked perfectly which was extra annoying. I tried changing keyboard language but it didnt work. I read here that it could be a numlock issue, since my asus transformer t200 don't have a numlock button as far as i know, I connected my usb keyboard and turned numlock off. After that this keyboard started working again. So I guess it don't handle usb keyboards very well. This problem started for me after I had used my USB keyboard and turned numlock on. It's kind of bad that this even can become an issue and I hope they fix it in a patch.
