Installed Ram and Smoke and crack and Screen wont turn on now but all fans still spin etc

Hi All,

I've had a serious problem where i installed some old ram into my custom gaming machine, and when i turned it on it
burnt and smoking smell was coming from where i installed the ram.

Now the problem is all my computer turns on the light on the motherboard comes on and all fans are spinning but, problem is
nothing comes up on screen, just a blank screen.

Now i'm feeling i want to go and just get a new motherboard as i reckon its fried, but can the motherboard light still come on if it's fried?

Could it be the CPU? if the smoke and smell came from removing the ram with dodgy ram?

Also i have a dedicated graphics card as well?

I need to know soon as i'm supposed to be getting rid of this computer and selling it

and just need some help.

Any help is so highly appreciated you wouldnt believe!

Hello,

Your motherboard for sure is shot, as the smoke likely came from the memory socket or the RAM which was installed. The power led can surely still be lit up, as that just indicates there is power to the mainboard. Quite possible your CPU and GPU are functional, as I have seen numerous lightning damaged computers with functional CPU/GPU's where just the power supply and/or mainboard were damaged...However, there is no easy way to tell if they will work or not, or if they work will they be stable...Best bet is to pull parts out one at a time and look for visible damage.

I cant recommend reusing the CPU/GPU for fear of damaging a replacement mainboard...You may consider bringing system to a local technician and let them test your parts individually, just to save yourself from damaging replacement parts.

did you pull the bad ram stick? or pull all the ram and look in the slots? I ran a board with a burnt ram socket before.

gotta add........ if you replace the board buy new ram to go along with it. don't use your "old" good stick.

Hi Yes, i took the bad stick out and i still have 2 sticks of ram fine before i put the bad one sin, so i m thinking of buying a new motherboard tonight to hopefully solve this? what do you think

didn't you rerun the machine with your "good" ram in it? a burnt ram slot doesn't necessarily mean a dead board.

what components are we talking about here?/ models..
