Phantom network usage at school

So I have a Macbook Air, latest model. I setup a geektool script that shows me my current data upstream and downstream. When I am at home, or anywhere else, on wifi, and not downloading or uploading anything, the upstream and downstream are 0 or extremely low, which makes sense. But on my schools network, and I'm downloading nothing, the downstream is always at 50KBps+ and it can get as high as 300KBps. I'm wondering why this is, why is that amount of data being sent to my computer, when I am not using it for anything.

Is the system managed by the school? It can be talking to the server for updates, security checks, inventory polling, etc...
Best thing to do is check with the IT department to get the exact details of the network traffic.

I will check with them and get back, the computer is school owned, but I reimaged the laptop, so there is no management by the school.
