Its an all new build for friend, all put together fine, no issues. The SSD is a Samsung 840EVO the mobo is a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H. Tried all the different sata modes, tried new sata and power cables, tried it in other sata ports. Nothing.

Yes, there will be a standard drive going in after, but its not been plugged in at all yet. The dvd drive was plugged in, but ive taken that out of the equation too, no change.

odd... can you check to see if your bios is thel atest? i'd do that, then set to AHCI and plug it into sata port 0

You can try this assuming booting from a windows USB or dvd:
At the welcome screen for Windows 7 installation hit Shift-F10. Then type this:
diskpart
list disk
select disk #(where your SSD drive is the disk # you select)

I'm trying to update the bios now, but its not seeing the f8 file on the root of the stick or usb drive I have in.

I have it set to AHCI and its back in SATA0. Booting from a Win 8 disc.

Just tried the list disk and as I expected there are no fixed disks to show.

Edit again: Updated the BIOS, no change. Tried it in my older machine, doesn't show up there at all either.

I've had drives not show up in the front BIOS screen (ASUS' UEFI), but when I went into advanced options and looked at the list of devices plugged in I could see it.

Another possibility (although I doubt this is the issue), is that you may have to initialize the drive in Windows first (so in another computer or using Windows installed on another drive in the computer) before you plug it into the computer. I know that's a potential issue when trying to use new drives in Windows sometimes (where you have to go to Disk Management and initialize the drive before you can play with it), so maybe this is what's giving you problems. Worth a try if you have another computer available

*As far as updating the BIOS, make sure it's a FAT32 formatted usb?

Thanks MC, yeah the FAT formatted stick was the issue, it didn't make any difference though.

I tried sticking it in another machine and it didn't show up in the bios there, so I didn't even attempt to boot into windows on that machine and see what could be done.

Waaait a minute, we have progress. Now it is showing in the BIOS, but not in the WIN 8 install, tried loading the driver from the Mobo disk and its still not showing up. Just when I thought I was getting somewhere!

Any ideas?

Edit: Now it is not showing in the BIOS again.

I remember that when I first got my EVO (as my computer started out with a normal 1 TB HDD), that I plugged it in and booted to the HDD like normal. I checked Disk Management but it seemed to be showing up there so I had no worries. I then installed the Magician software on my HDD and used that to update the Firmware as needed. After I prepared my drive like that I shut everything down, unplugged the HDD, and then installed Windows just fine. I then plugged the HDD back in and wiped it after booting from the SSD.

The whole point of what I'm saying is to put the SSD into a machine with Windows on another drive, and see if Windows/Samsung's Magician Software identifies it.

I have installed Win 8 on the standard 3.5 sata that is going to be living in it as a storage drive, installed all the Samsung software off the disk and still nothing, well nothing but a nag saying it cant find a Samsung SSD every time it boots.
