CPU fan error

Hello everyone,

My friend has recently purchased a new CPU/motherboard. I've built a few rigs, so I set it up for him. In his previous build, he had an AMD FX-8320, cooled by a Hyper 212 EVO. We're now using an ASUS Z87-A (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...), and an i5 4670K.

Everything works fine, except, we got 'CPU fan error', and the fan does not spin. I tried plugging the CPU fan into a case fan 4pin, but this didn't solve the issue. The fan 'stutters' (it starts to spin but then stops dead in it's tracks), and it isn't being blocked by anything.

Is the fan dead? It was working before (literally 2 hours before I started building the PC).

Sounds to me like there is a faulty connection.
What's probably happened is there's a loose/bad solder between the wire and motor.
Since you have "Recently" bought the item, it should be in warranty.
Hope this helps!

Well, the Hyper 212 EVO is not new. Only the motherboard and CPU are new.
After further investigation, other people with the ASUS Z87-A also seem to have this problem.
I use this mobo in one of my builds, with an H100i. I get this error sometimes, and after a while the pump starts working. I think it's just a common problem with the Z87-A..

Disappointing, really. I guess we'll have to attempt an RMA, or just live with this downside.

Thanks anyways.

Yeah that's probably a BIOS glitch, that can easily be fixed by rolling back or updating your BIOS.
Also, if the fan is "Stuttering" that indicates that there is a loose connection

After a few tests, we used one of the fans the case came with.
Seems to have resolved our issues, I guess the fan died.. really weird, but at least it wasn't the motherboard!
