Data loss from external hdd

i tried putting a 2tb ext hdd in to my pc as an extra drive and windows 7 said it was unallocated and made me choose between MBR or GPT i chose MBR and then it told me to format it now ive lost all my music and videos and data ive tried data reacovery software but they keep retrieving files i dont recognise is there anything i can do to get my music and videos and data back?

i have been scrathcing my head and searching the net but with no luck any help would be great please.
 
Solution
You reformatted, and now there's a new file system in place. Windows probably formatted it as NTFS when it was a FAT32 drive before. If you're just getting back garbage from the data recovery software, you are likely out of luck.
