First off, let me preface this by saying I've just spent the last 1.5 hrs reading approx 30 posts on the 41 Kernal and have not found the guidance I need.

Wasn't sure where in the forums to post this, but since I really feel that this is probably software related, this is where I landed.

About my computer:

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Processor: AMD FX 6300 Six Core 3.50 Ghz
8 GB RAM

Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0
PSU: 850w

So I built this computer a few months back and it's been running great. I haven't gamed on it, but recently I started using it to capture footage from the Xbox 360 using the Hauppauge HD PVR 2. Everything was going fine, until I upgraded Hauppauge's Capture utility. The first sign something was wrong was that night when I was cap'ing all of a sudden I realize the Hauppauge isn't recording any more and when I switch my monitor over to the computer (I use it for both) I find my computer has tried to reboot and it's got that warning that Windows wasn't shut down right.

SINCE, however, it has crashed several times, usually after I go to bed for the night. It doesn't happen every night, and it doesn't happen often, but I have read some threads referring to issues with the computer trying to go to sleep and crashes happening at those times, so it could be related?

Also, my instincts are telling me it could be software related, possibly driver. I've "reinstalled" the Hauppauge Capture software's drivers this morning, but I've seen other references that bad drivers should be removed completely before reinstalling?

What I'm looking for today are some specific tests or places on my computer I can look to try and solve what is the issue. I am somewhat of a newb if not competent at following instructions, so I did discover it's a Kernal 41 error and that the variables were 0's, but I can't recall how I got that information :/

I HIGHLY doubt this is an overheating issue, as it usually happens when the computer is sleeping, and the case is huge and well-ventilated.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Should I have posted this somewhere else? Now I have additional information:

When the capture card and microphone are plugged in via USB, the computer will not restart Windows after it shuts itself off, but when I unplug them I get a different screen, part of which says:

"SATA Port 1
Toshiba XXXXXXXXXX
S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad
Backup and Replace"

Does this ALWAYS mean the hard drive is bad, or could a bad USB driver be causing this error?

Turns out in my case the hard drive was going out. Going... going... gone! Computer is now kaput and won't even boot Windows at this point. Good thing the hard drive is new and has a 1 year warranty. Also good I hadn't really put anything on it, and I backed all my graphics up as soon as it started giving me trouble! Triple good I got it figured out, because I wasn't getting any help here ;)
