Hi, I Installed a R9 290x into my pc and I keep getting blackscreens after playing games like: League of legends, Sometimes Minecraft and heavy games like metro last light.

I tried almost everything that I can think of like update my AMD drivers, Reinstalled windows, Check my cabels, underclocking and alot more.

I even opend my pc and put an big ass fan on it that was mend for me not for the computer and it still happend.

To make clear what happens: I play a game and then suddenly I get a blackscreen then my screen says "No Signal" but my computer stays on all the lights stay on and I can hear the fans still running.

I hope someone can help me with this thanks! (sorry for the bad english)

Hi, again I did some research and aperently more people have the same problem even do they have 1100 Watt Psu's

If you look at this video you can see what happens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaccFP5ZzG0
and if you look in the comments you can see people are having the same problem with the same card so do you have any other suggestions?

My power supply is 680Watt and I have send my r9 290x back to the store twice now and I got a new 1 every time do you think im realy unlucky with them or that my power supply is just not doing his job? Thanks for the fast reply btw.

No, its impossible to be sure. What I do know is that most of the GPU companies have the minimum power requirements for a R9 290 listed at 700+ watts. Now, of course they go over what is probably necessary so they don't get sued, but still, I think its a pretty good chance that your PSU is the culprit here. You can always return it.

Your powersupply uses 4 rails each at 18amps 12*18 = 216watts per rail. So while your PSU is strong enough, each rail is not.

You could try plugging in the 8 pin pcie power connector to one rail and the 6 pin to another. Although I've never tried this myself. Also make sure whatever rail(s) you've got the card on, it the only thing on those rails.

So how much Watt do you recommend for 1?

Are you using Catalyst 14.6 Beta? I've had the same issue you described (in Battlefield 4 and Sleeping Dogs) with 14.6 but it never happens with the 14.4 WHQL drivers.

Interesting, I'm running an Antec 750w with 4 rails and 25A on each of those. Currently, I have 2 separate rails hooked into my 290 and once every say 10ish hrs of gaming I get a black screen. Oh well. Does anyone know where I can look to see if there is a bios update available for my reference XFX r9 290?

Edit: After all the issues I've had with AMD cards, I think it may be time to switch to nvidia after I move on from the 290. They just seem to have less problems.

Yeah, nvidia costs more but, seems to be a bit more 'refined'. If only it didn't come with such a premium over the competition.

yeah i agree, I was not trying to start a anti AMD thing but i have read so many negative things about them? and
my buddy bought a new 7970 matrix and had to return it and i remember how depressed he was over that.
he has since been using a GTX 770 sc and has not had the slightest issue.
