Memory upgrade question.

Hi all, I've just been speaking with my dad about a memory upgrade, and he has 2 spare sticks of 2gb ram, I have 2x2gb already, so adding these new sticks will bump me to 8gb ram.
My question is, will it be ok to do so?
I've heard before that mixing ram isn't a good thing, and I'm wondering if this is what people mean by mixing ram?

Do the memory sticks all have the same specifications(voltage, number of pins, Etc)? Do they have the same DDR rate? Getting 4 sticks of ram to work is problematic at best, you may have to underclock them to get them to work.

I haven't a clue what their specs are yet, as I have to go pick them up from my fathers house, but they are ddr2 or 3 which mine are too.

Well, which are they, DDR2 or DDR3? They have to be all one or the other. Which standard does YOUR motherboard support? You cannot mix DDR2 with DDR3. The sticks are keyed differently, so DDR3 sticks will not physically fit in a DDR2 motherboard, and vice versa.

As long as they are the same DDR rate, once you do find out what the specs are, you could check the QVL for the motherboard. The only other option is to put them in and see if they work.

I think as it's probably just the sticks on their own, best bet is to stick them in and try, I'd imagine if hey em don't work it won't damage anything right?, also how would I know it doesn't work?

It shouldn't damage anything. If your PC doesn't boot, then you can say that they won't work. Run MEMTEST86 if the PC boots up to see if the memory is good.
