Well I don't know about it being illegal but if you really wanted to you could deactivate your product key off of your old computer then, wherever the new hard drive is going try and use that key. It may not allow you to use that key even if you do this though.

it is illegal. the key is legally registered to your motherboard when you accept the eula
so as soon as windows detects that the hash table thats created when you first install it has changed the key becomes invalid.
when you accept the eula you accept legal responsibilities to use the software, so if you misuse it your acting illegally.
its all in the words mate. the words mean what they mean. no interpretation... (although many lawyers say meaning is open to interpretation legal speak is not.) its a very basic language where every word has its place.

Why do you people immediately assume what he's doing is "illegal"? How about he's just reinstalling a new hard drive on a netbook and there's no way to use a cd? I've been to these forums a couple of times and the word "illegal" always pops up. Weird.

because in this case it is illegal and toms advertises microsoft products.
you may not like it, but its the reality and just saying you dont believe it or dont care about it doesnt suddenly make it legal...

the only time its legal is if your installing the o.s on the original machine the key is attached to. you can use any windows disk of the version you have (pro key you need a pro disk).

lol mate read the second sentence... if its the original machine its fine unless you change out to many parts as to cause the machine to want to validate again.
(taking out the motherboard will trigger it as will taking out the cpu, and gpu together) so yeah like i say it really does depend.
