I bought a computer ATX tower case recently but forgot to check on what USB frontal connectors it has. were on it. the motherboard that I bought has 2 F_USB connections for up to 4 USB ports, but none for 3.0 USB.
When the case arrived,I noted it had one 3.0 USB port, and one 2.0 USB port
in front.
is there a gadget or adapter that I could purchase to make the 3.0 USB port operative?
Right now I have its Frontal cable tied to the bay to keep it out of the way.
the motherboard is a gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L ver. 2.4

Solution

My solution is very similar to the one two below mine. A card that would plug into pci(e, mini, ext depending which final card) and then you plug in the header/cable from your case USB to that card. The other one posted two after mine is actually the better, it had a header input and gives a bracket to screw into back of case making it sturdier and gives you two full fledge additional USB 3.0 ports on the back. Both those are $20, so his is by far better choose. The answer directly below mine is a cable you would plug in your case 3.0...

The answer directly below mine is a cable you would plug in your case 3.0 plug into, and then the other sie of that cable you plug into a USB 2.0 header on your motherboard. While this choice is $1 plus shipping, and will work, it will only give you USB 2.0 speeds. Roughly 40 mbps vs 3.0 speeds not sure max but will handle 300mbps from experience. But all of which will work and allow your front ports to be used. One will limit front usb3.0 to 2.0 speeds, one (mine will give you your 3.0 plugs at 3.0 speeds, and the other give you your 3.0 at 3.0 speeds and two additional 3.0 USB plugs for the back of your case. Making that the best option

This item is just an adapter. If you plug a USB 3.0 device into it, it will just fall back to the USB 2.0 standard because only the USB 2.0 pins are connected.

Be careful of USB3 HDs that don't come with a external power supply. Those HDs are designed assuming you can pull the full 800ma from a USB3 port. USB2 only supplies 500ma which may not be enough. If they come with a separate power cable, you're in the clear, the device will pull power from the separate cable instead of the USB3 cable.

The item I linked takes a power connector from the PSU. At which point, it's a fully functioning USB 3.0 port.
