CPU underclocking in safe temperatures?

I have a FX8120 that I overclocked to 4.0ghz. Ive started to notice recently when playing Watch_Dogs and BF3 that I would randomly drop down to 10 frames while playing for a few seconds then it would go back up to normal. While running Core Temp I noticed it was changing the multipler to x7 instead of x20 when I lost frames even though the temp was maxing out at 50C. It also does this while running Prime95. I have all power saving features disabled, (Cool n' Quiet, C6, C1E, Cpu Throttling). Im pretty sure the max temp for this cpu is 61C so I am not sure why it is underclocking in these temperatures.

Specs:
asrock 990fx extreame 3
FX8120 Black Edition @4.0ghz
Corsair H60
Thermaltek 600w
EVGA GTX 760SC

I don't think that Watch_Dogs is a good example to use when the game is bugged as hell. Anyways, are your drivers up to date? This could be a whole bunch of different things. Try to undo the overclock and test BF3 again. Try to explain the problem a bit more, did this happen before you overclocked your CPU? To me it sounds like a failed overclock.

And when you undo your overclock, do you notice any temperature differences (any drastic temp drops)? See if your CPU cooler is mounted properly. Could you post some CPUID pictures of your temps at idle and while gaming?

Im not sure why, but it stopped doing it. I plan to upgrade to a i5 4670k soon anyway since I've had the 8120 for almost 2 years now, so If it starts back up I won't worry much about it. Thanks for trying
