Going to get an SSD today. As my 1tb seagate is 75% full and starting to run sluggish and my system freezes up occasionally after a right click while in windows explorer. I had been meaning to add one when I built the rig back in dec 2013. So im probably getting the samsung 840 evo 250gb ssd as it's on sale at microcenter right now. Just wondering what do I need to do to to install the new ssd just for the OS and still keep my hdd with all my programs/games etc without having to reinstall them and etc. Any input is appreciated.

Current rig specs-
I7 4770k
Asrock extreme 3
1tb seagate hdd
Asus gtx 760
Win 7

There are various cloning applications. Only one that I know of will move only the OS to a new drive.
Non-free, but here it is:

However....a fresh install on the new SSD is very much the preferred path to follow.

You have a 1TB that is 75% full (~750GB)
You're getting a 250GB SSD.

Your best (and recommended) solution is simply a fresh install on the new SSD.
And then reinstall all your applications.

Anything else will take just as long or longer and may not work as well.

Can you clarify for me. When u say reinstall applications. U mean the ones on my HDD? Im trying to keep my HDD and just use my Ssd for OS/start up. Also if I do a fresh install do I have to use the same version of win7 thats on my HDD or can I go with another version or even win8.1?

Whatever application you use will need to be reinstalled. You can't use them as they sit on the HDD.
If you're getting a 250GB, there is no reason to have only the OS on it. That drive can hold a LOT of applications.
I have a 120GB, and it holds ALL my applications apart from games.
Games may be another matter as far as size. They can be installed on the HDD.

For the OS...whatever you have a license for. If you have the activation key and install media for Win 7, just use that. Or if you want to go to 8/8.1, buy that and install.

Have only the SSD connected (SATA slot 1) when you install the OS.
After everything is running, then you can reconnect the HDD.
Assuming you have all your data (docs/music/etc) saved elsewhere, you can wipe the HDD.
Install applications as necessary.

I dont have those saved elsewhere. All ive had was the same HDD for the last couple of builds. And I have a ton of games. WoW, D3, Swtor, steam etc etc. I was really wanting to supplement the HDD not replace it persae. Its a ton of work/data etc on it. Few yrs worth. So is there anyway to copy paste or save everything currently on my HDD without actually losing the data or saved configurations and etc.

You're not actually replacing it, but rather adding to it with the SSD.

However, with a fresh install on the SSD, you'll need to reinstall your applications. Steam games can usually be 'moved', but not all of them.

Very few of your existing applications will work without being reinstalled. They can be on the SSD or the HDD, but the new Registry will not know anything about them until you reinstall.

And it there's a few years of work data, you should really have a duplicate copy elsewhere. You are one drive crash away from losing it all.

So Im trying to do a fresh install but it wont allow me to. I cant even get to that menu. Nor does bios see the SSD. I have my hdd disconnected. But if I plug it up and boot to it I can see the ssd in windows explorer. Do I need to format the ssd 1st? Or create a partition 1st? Ive tried booting from cd and all it does is get stuck or freezr at the language select window.

After clearing cmos it still didnt show in bios. But it finally goes to win installation. But says cannot be installed to this disk " the computers hardware may not support booting to this disk

Will it be stable for overclocking? Are the presets in the bios suitable? I got the CM hyper 212 evo when I got the SSD. Just didn't wanna make anew thread for it.

Yes your motherboard is fine for light overclocking with your cpu cooler as well.
For overclocking cpu, it is better to look up guides and videos to learn because presets aren't good since everyone setup is different. also don't plug a random number in else you might damage your components.
Down below is a simple guide but there are many others. Research before overclocking. Note overclocking doesn't give you huge performance, see it as a hobby.
