Hello.
I want to use a hard drive without formatting it. I used to have a ps3, now it has died and I am buying a new one. I want to buy a new PS3 but still have my old data. I want to use my PS3 HDD on my PC so I can copy the files onto a USB, but it is forcing me to format it. I can't format it or I would lose about 2000 hours worth of stuff. Please help. If there is a way to make an internal HDD into a external (so I dont have to format), please say so. Thank you.

I'm not sure what file system the PS3 uses, but I would guess it would be linux based and therefore not readable in windows (assuming you are using windows)

Why don't you plug an external usb into the PS3? It detects fat32 usb devices and you can copy off that way.

Unfortunately, my PS3 is dead. I won't start, it turns on for a couple of seconds then cuts out.

Did a bit of googling, I don't think this is possible. It looks like even if you send it to Sony for repair they may format the drive and they have no policy for data recovery as it is classed as users responsibility.

The drive uses a custom version of the fat32 file system so nothing other than your original PS3 (or maybe someone at Sony) can read this drive.
