Hey,

My new i7 4770 reached temperatures of about 80 C (176 F) while playing Battlefield 4 today, should I be worried? What can I do to lower it?

Thanks!

Open up your case and blow out all of the dust from the CPU cooler. Also check that all the fans are spinning while the PC is on.

If this doesn't help, change the thermal paste. Remove the cooler, use q-tips and isopropyl alcohol to wipe off all the old thermal paste, apply some new paste using the dot method (Google it) and then attach the cooler.

If there still is no change, I recommend doing as suggested above; Get a cooler like the Hyper 212 Evo from Cooler Master.

I agree 100% with Eduello, those are all great tips.

Also, things you can do to lower it aside from those mentioned, are you overclocking?

-If you are, you should lower your overclock.
-You can try adding case fans if you don't already have them.
-You can try moving around your current case fans to a more "optimal" situation (More intakes, less exhausts for example)
-Get a CPU air cooler (Like a Hyper 212, air coolers are just ones that use metal & fans to cool your CPU)
-Get a water cooler, closed loop (Like the Corsair H80i, 100i, etc, or The NZXT Krakens, etc)

There are many ways of cooling, you should also worry about other components too, GPU's, HDD's, MoBo's, they all can get hot, and function better when cool, so keep an eye out.

If you need programs to monitor your temps try some of these (Google search them, but BE CAREFUL when downloading things from the internet, and be weary of add-ons that some apps install without your knowlegde):
-Crystal Disk Info (for HDD monitoring, this one installs a crappy search tool with it, I would suggest doing a custom install with this one)
-GPU-ID (for GPU monitoring, made by TechPowerup)
-MSI Afterburner (great program, used for GPU monitoring, as well as overclocking, can be used to actively test your GPU fans)
-CPU-Z (made by CPUID, used for CPU, RAM, Mobo, etc, speed monitoring)

Have same CPU and get same temps while gaming on BF4 (~78C). So I got myself an Arctic Cooling Freezer LP 11 CPU cooler. Easy to fit and knocked roughly 10 degrees C off load temps, so now temps on BF4 are ~69C.

Same here: I have the 4770 non k version, and was getting a steady upper 70(s) with BONIC tasks. I added a Hyper 212 EVO and now I range from upper 30(s)c to about 54C using BONIC, so I got a roughly 20c-30c drop in temperature by using the 212 EVO over the stock Intel cooler.

Well done. I originally wanted the 212 or TX3 but realized that with their size it might be a tight squeeze, since once the cooler is in, the side panel is reinstalled and that has two 120 case fans on it that might have conflicted. I didn't want to take the chance so I got a low profile cooler and it has shaved off 10C which is fine for me. I am not overclocking so never going over 70 for me is good.
