Possibly following a recent MS update I have two apparent problems/oddities that I think are linked and they both started to occur at the same time....
(1) Occasionally during file selection from an application, the system locks with the spinning wheel as though it's busy trying to do something else. Always this can be stopped by Control/Alt/Delete to initiate start of Task Manager. Simply hitting Cancel without actually starting Task Manager unglues things. Occasionally after these events, the video seems not to refresh properly and "takes time to catch up" with what the application is doing.
(2) When pressing the right hand button on the taskbar to call the Desktop, on release I get a brief flash (full screen) of an old jpeg I used weeks ago. I get the same picture very briefly as a flash on shutdown of the pc.

Neither of these things are the end of the world but they are irritating. I have updated all video card drivers, applied all MS updates, checked video memory, system memory. All HDDs are reporting OK.

Has anyone any idea what could caused this effect?

This tends to happen because a hard drive in your pc is spinning up and the computer is waiting for the hard drive spindle to spin up fast enough for it to be read/written too.
What hard drives do you have?
