i am planning on upgrading my asus z87 rog maximus vi hero to a asus z97 sabertooth and i want to know if it will support the ram that i have . i have 2x8 16gb Kingston hyperx beast ddr3 2400 . will the asus z97 sabertooth support my ram ?

Hi orndorf
The z97 sabertooth will most likely accept your ram but will downclock it to 1866mhz or 1600mhz as the board does not support memory that high
so enabling xmp will most likely not work

Yes the motherboard can handle it fine.

The question is the cpu. Every 100mhz you go beyond your max supported ram is a 100mhz overclock to the cpu's memory bandwidth controller (cpu-nb)

So if your cpu's supported ram is 1600mhz and you want 2400mhz you will have to o.c cpu-nb 800mhz.

Leaves with the question of heat, voltage and silicone lottery along with heavy reduction to the life of the processor.

1600mhz is fine for most people and 1866mhz is uber for a gamer because its better to have lower cas anyway even if you render.
