i just put on new thermal paste, thinking the would fix my high temp issue, but the air coming of the vent is still hot. it is warm even when not doing intensive tasks like going on the internet. any ideas on how to fix the problem.

Solution

I'm starting to think this may be an issue with the thermal censor. Your GPU is actually built into the CPU so a difference of temperature of ~50degrees seems highly unlikely. Most likely its a bug with the censor and going by the GPU temperature I'm sure your laptop is fine. Don't worry about it, warm air will continue to come out of the laptop thats normal. If you have any issues with shutdowns because of heat post again.

Not a problem at all, all computers produce heat so warm air is inevitable. If you're really worried try downloading HWmonitor which lets you see temperature. Most modern computer components are fine up until ~90 Celcius.

I would look at HW monitor and see the CPU and socket temps before you panick. In a way having hot air coming out of the case is a good thing, it means that the heatsink and the fans are doing their job and getting the heat away from the computer.

downloaded and it says: HP 1849 THRM value 53c, AMD a8-4500m value 102c, 840 EVO SSD value 33c, AMD Radeon HD 7640g value 48c. Which one should i be looking at to determine if it is running too hot

Okay 102Celcius is a pretty big concern, could you post a screenshot of the HWmonitor screen. How did you apply the thermal paste. Was it something like THIS?

Okay something is very wrong, take off the cpu cooler, wipe away the old thermal paste with alcohol wipes, reapply the thermal paste and cooler. Then start the computer up and post another screenshot. At idle your cpu temperature should be around 30-40Celcius, yours are ~100Celcius.
