Unwanted desktop icons windows 8.1

Suddenly all my desktop icons doubled. The duplicates are not useable. I cannot move them or delete them. I'm using Windows 8.1

Have you attempted to see if the desktop background wallpaper is just a screenshot of the actual Desktop?

This can be confusing to you because it will show duplicates of what you have on the desktop after moving icons around, since it is a picture of your Desktop.

Can you take a screenshot please and show it?

I am embarrassed to say that's exactly what it was, I had two pictures of the same wallpaper. One with icons and one without icons. I feel like an idiot! I've been looking for solutions all day, then it finally dawned on me what I did.
