I built my PC about a year ago, and I'm looking to update. I'm thinking about buying another video card, but I want to make sure it's compatible with my Radeon 7900 series. Also, my motherboard only has PCI 2.0 slots, so I'm wondering if the newer Radeon R7 and R9 cards are even compatible with my motherboard.

Here are my specs:
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard
AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor (6 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
8 GB RAM

Although I can still play everything I want to play, I don't see the performance that I would like to see.

I'm wondering if buying another graphics card to work with my Radeon 7900 is worth it or if I need to buy an entirely new motherboard in order to make use of a newer PCI 3.0 graphics card.

Thanks for any help!

What is your exact card model 7950, 7970 or 7990. But the 280x is a rebranded 7970 so that will probably be your best bet

Well, how big is your budget? You can buy a lot of cards, such as GTX 760, 770 or 780; or AMD 270, 280, 290... you know... as far as I know, all of them are compatible with you AM3+ build.

EDIT: oh, you want to do CrossFire with your actual card. As it is suggested, 280x may be your card.

I have the HD7950 3GB card by PowerColor.

Also, if there is a slightly cheaper option, I might want to stay away from the 280x as most that I find are close to $300. I built my original PC with about $650, so I'm not sure how I feel about a $300 graphics card haha.

Thanks a lot for your input, though.

No problem you 7950 will still be able to max out most games and before you think about buying another card you have to make sure your powersupply is powerful enough and has enough pci-exp connectors

Well, the main reason I'm considering it is because it's not able to max out most games. It has a hard time keeping good frame rates, anyway. League of Legends, for example, drops to 15 frames and lower on max graphics. It's not even a very demanding game.

I'm fairly certain my 650W supply has the necessary connectors, but thanks for bringing that up. I'll definitely check before I make a decision.

You can probably get a 7950 on craigslist or ebay for cheaper but bit mining has brought up its price

Just one more question. If I do decide to go for the 280x, will that be crossfirex compatible with my 7950?

The 280x is a rebranded 7970 so it will work another suggestion is sell your 7950 and purchase a 290
