I have recently bough a new graphics cards and was hoping to find the reason for the black screen.
New Graphics card - MSI R9 280x gaming - 3G - Twin Frozr

Old graphics card - Radeon HD 5770 1GB

Mother board - Fragigabyte ga-m68mt-s2
Power supply - 400w

I think that the issue is with the power supply unit but i wanted to check before going out and buying a new one. If this is the case could you possibly recommed any PSU.

i'm surprised that PSU hasn't killed everything, put the 5770 back in and see what still works. a decent 600W, seasonic would be a good brand there are other good brands but others will chip in with those i'm sure.

Well what is your budget?
550W-650W is enough.
Brand to consider: Antec, Coolermaster V series, Corsair(AX,HX or TX), EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Series, Seasonic or XFX

That one is not good. Only the Coolermaster V series power supply are good. I meant these one but their wattage is too high for your build unless you plan to crossfire: http://www.coolermaster.com/product/Lines/enthusiast-v-...
