CPU won't boot after replacing PSU

The other day my cpu shut down while my son was in the middle of playing a game ( I was at work at the time). The game is well within what my rig can handle and has been run countless times. So I don't suspect the game was the issue.

What appears to have happened is the psu died. I replaced it with another but I still can't get back into the cpu. I have power to all components; mobo, fans, graphics card, optical drive and the hard drive spins up. The only thing I'm not getting is the LED on the power button will not light up and I don't get the chime at boot up and my monitor shows no signal. This may be because I can't boot or possibly the gpu was fried. I'm at a loss at this point. Hoping someone might be able to get me back on the right track. Thanks in advance.

I have another mobo I could use. Is there going to be a way to use my HD with the new mobo without wiping it?

Your description is a bit vague. When you say you can't get into the CPU do you mean that everything powers up but it says there isn't a CPU or you can't start anything at all? Do you get any beeps when booting up? I would try to unplug everything that's connected to the MB and see if it boots. If it does replace components one by one until it doesn't boot anymore. If it doesn't boot with just the MB you could have bad RAM, CPU, or MB (assuming the new PSU is good). Unfortunately the only way to diagnose is to replace each part with working parts from another machine.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. What I meant was I have components getting power but I don't get the boot chime and therefore no boot up and the power light led on the switch won't come on. I'm assuming if I can't get a boot chime that something went wrong with the mobo?

Okay, I guess that's the info I was looking for. So what can I expect if I wan't to transplant my HD to this other mobo I have. Also, the dead mobo was AMD the new (prospective) mobo is intel. Am I going to have to format and reinstall OS?

Yes the other machine has everything it needs. The reason we stopped using it was it needed a new OS (was running XP, don't have space for two towers atm etc). It also has a working HD. I suppose I could install my OS on that HD and then move 'my' HD into it as well? I'm just trying to come up with a way to save some of the data that was on it.

Alright! Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate the information!

If you replace the mobo with an identical mobo, your hard drive should work.
If the chipsets are similar, it should let you boot ino windows and install any needed drivers.
If the mobo is very different, like intel vs. amd, it is not going to work and you will need to do a clean install.

I have not tried this procedure but it may work for you:

If you're running XP I doubt you'll have a drop in replacement. Generally Intel and AMD aren't compatible with one another. If you're willing to spend a few bucks see if they have an equivalent on ebay. Otherwise your going to have to rebuild from scratch. I've replaced MBs but even when the chipset is similar you don't get good results unless you do a clean install.
