I usually keep my laptop on my desk right next to my modem whenever I'm using it but recently have been going from my desk to my bed. When I'm sitting at my desk on the internet I usually get about 1-1.5 Mbps, but when I go over and try and use the internet on my bed it drops to a max of about 200 Kbps, and my bed is only about 5 feet from my desk. As soon as I move from my bed, it doesn't matter where in my room I move to, the internet goes right back up to 1.5 Mbps. I've even tried using an Ethernet cable to my laptop and it still tops out at about 200 kbps. Is there anything I can do to make it so my internet doesn't drop when using my laptop on my bed? I currently don't have a router, I only have the modem I was given when I signed up for my internet. The internet plan I currently have is supposed to top out at 15 Mbps but I usually get about 5 Mbps tops, if that has anything to do with it.

If speedtest.net keeps saying your getting less than what your paying for while wired to the modem then it is time to call the ISP and tell them to send out a tech.

try down loading from metageek, inSSIDer. All of there home version 3's are free. this will help you know if your router is fighting with a lot of wi-fi congestion causing the drop. wi-fi will never give as much speed as wired but should be with in the ball park. Example: I have 50Mbps down, reading 50 - 54 Mbps at desk top wired, Laptop gets 43 -48 Mbps down on a congested Wi-Fi Channel.
